Genes and cultural acquisition

Cube proposed by: Carolyn Yoon

Unit: Business

About this project:
This project will focus on genetic influences on acquisition of culture (conceptualized as internalization of various beliefs and normative rules, conditioning of certain responses in accordance with beliefs and norms, and learning of scripted behavioral patterns). The openness to cultural influence may depend on multiple psychological processes involving social cognition and behavior, as well as personal or temperamental factors that interact with genetic factors. A series of studies will investigate the extent to which individual differences in openness or susceptibility to cultural influences might be accounted for by genetic factors. In particular, the project will utilize a combination of behavioral and neurobiological methods to examine the effects of specific genetic polymorphisms on modal psychological and behavioral tendencies of culture among European Americans versus East Asians.
