Activating the Arts: Oaxaca to Detroit
The arts are closely tied to regional and economic development. Artists are small scale entrepreneurs who animate and activate cities through the marketing and distribution of their products. This project models a way in which two cities, one international and one local, can establish exchange activities and create financial pathways for distribution of work between the two sites. Why Mexico?
The recent Diego Rivera exhibition at the Detroit Institute for the Arts illustrated the potency and persistence of ongoing arts exchange between the city of Detroit and Mexican artists. Oaxaca is a Mexican mecca for all arts, and an ideal site for this experiment in art entrepreneurship. This project builds upon a previous GIEU exchange program and creates new mechanisms for developing and distributing visual and performing art across national borders.
