The Celia Project, a research, publication, and public history collaboration, explores The State of Missouri v. Celia to develop new humanistic scholarship on the role of sexual violence. Our team of historians, literary scholars, and legal scholars bring expertise to a multi-authored volume containing analyzes of Celia’s case, its historical importance and contemporary resonances. The Project will make available via an on-line archive Celia’s history and the larger context of the history of slavery in Missouri. We will present our research to a broad public through exhibitions and lectures. We will contribute to local efforts to commemorate Celia’s life and death. Finally, we will provide historical perspectives on present day political debates concerning racism and violence by state actors, issues that are nowhere more urgent than in Missouri.
