To help students prepare for college, we should do our best to attend to all of their needs. We need to provide more opportunity: ensuring that students everywhere can access more of what they need to become college-ready. But we must also shore up their intent: building desire, buttressing will, and inspiring ambition. To accomplish all of this, we propose to develop an array of student supports. We aim to help thousands of young people successfully complete college degrees who would not otherwise do so. Some of them will attend the University of Michigan; most will not.
Our preliminary design for Intend to Attend imagines three interdependent elements: a wide array of learning opportunities, a richly tailored electronic coaching system, and a four-year gameful college preparation environment. These elements draw on all three branches of the Office of Academic Innovation: the Digital Education and Innovation Lab, the Digital Innovation Greenhouse, and the Gameful Learning Lab.
