M3 Monarch Migration Study
Every fall, millions of Monarch butterflies across North America migrate south to central Mexico to survive the coming winter. Evidence clearly indicates that Monarch migration is in sharp decline. To better understand their annual migration paths, and therefore help preserve these majestic butterflies, we aim to track the flight paths of individual Monarch butterflies. In addition to demonstrating key technological advances in micro-computing, small object tracking, and machine learning, this work will contribute to key monarch conservation outcomes, such as a more detailed understanding of habitat use during migratory flight.
