The making of a physician: the moral aspects of premedical and medical education
Together with colleagues in sociology and the medical school I am studying the explicit and implicit moral/ethical lessons of premedical and medical education. We know very little about: 1) how the premedical experience shapes the physician work force and 2) the lacunae in ethics education in medical school. Using work already begun -- we have completed 50 interviews with premeds here at U Michigan and we have started to explore what is lacking in medical school ethics education -- we will design a comprehensive study that will identify the social forces that shape the ethical sensibilities of the next generation of physicians.
