Detroiters are 160% more likely to die from cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to the national average. Residents of neighborhoods with high concentrations of poverty and race-based residential segregation have increased risk of CVD. Walking in groups increases safety and provides social support for physical activity, an important contributor to CV health. Walk Your Heart to Health (WYHH) walking groups are an evidence-based intervention that reduce CV risk. We propose to develop a business model to turn the WYHH program into a sustainable Detroit-based effort to ensure that walking groups remain available to residents of high poverty, segregated communities with challenges to maintaining physically active lifestyles. We will bring together entrepreneurial, public health and public policy expertise to develop a sustainable business model for WYHH to maintain availability to residents of low income neighborhoods with excess CV risk.
