Transformative approaches to study cell signaling
This project will bring together a strong team of researchers with complementary expertise to gain insight into the function of Protein Kinase C (PKC). PKC function is important in normal cellular function and is an important drug target for disease states such as diabetes, heart failure and diabetes. Dr. John Tesmer will lead a pilot effort aimed at obtaining high resolution X-ray crystal structures of active PKC. Dr. Sivaramakrishnan has developed FRET-based sensors for PKC that will be used to complement these structural insights. Dr. Westfall will translate the mechanistic understanding gained from structure/function studies to PKC function in adult cardiomyocytes.
