Dr. Figueroa-Romero is interested in the complex molecular regulatory mechanisms affecting gene expression and the cross talk between environmental factors and the genome. She is especially interested in studying the role of post-translational modifications and epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation and microRNAs in the development of sporadic neurodegeneration. She takes a multi-disciplinary and multi-collaborative approach to understand the contribution of environmental exposures to the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
