Dr. Mistretta's research is to understand development and differentiation of the taste system and oral mechanosensory cells. Current projects in the laboratory include study of sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling in tongue, taste papilla and taste bud formation and maintenance. Because lingual epithelia and taste bud cells turn over and are replaced throughout adult life, they are susceptible to effects from disturbances in the oral environment and from drugs in maintaining cell integrity and taste function. Interactions among Shh, Wnt and Bmp signaling, in exchanges between the tongue epithelium and mesenchymal tissues, during formation of taste papillae and taste buds are also investigated. Related to HH signaling in regulating maintenance of taste papillae and buds, the roles of primary cilia in tongue, taste papilla and taste receptor cells are explored.
