My research is focused on determining predictors (especially early life determinants) for the development and progression of preclinical autoimmunity and autoimmune diseases (emphasis on lupus). I am particularly interested in evaluating risk of immune dysregulation associated with mercury and heavy metals, and determining their mechanisms of immunotoxicity and relevant gene-environment interactions in human populations. I am futher interested in women's health, and the pronounced sex disparities in risk of autoimmune diseases, and ovarian preservation among women treated with gonadotoxic agents. I also have expertise in public health surveillance of chronic diseases, and am PI of a large scale population-based systemic lupus erythematosus registry in southeastern Michigan (>2000 patients) which is rich resource for conducting ancillary studies.
