I recieved bachelors degrees from Carroll University (Wisconsin) in 1972 and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1977, and a PhD in Forest Ecology from the University of Wisconsin in 1983. I was the Jesse Smith Noyes Postdoctoral Fellow at the Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) 1983-1984 and held positions of Assistant,, Associate, and Senior Scientist at the MBL from 1984 - 2002. I was a Fullbright Senior Fellow at the Norwegian Institutel for Water Research (Oslo, Norway) and the Norwegian Institute for Forest Research (Ås, Norway) in 1996-97 and served as Co-Director of the NSF Ecosystem Studies Program 2002-3, prior to joining the University of Michigan as a professor in EEB and Director of the Biological Station.
I am an ecosystem ecologist with a research focus on 1) cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and other elements in temperate and arctic ecosystems; 2) plant-soil-atmosphere interactions; 3) climate impacts on terrestrial ecosystems; 4) the effects of atmospheric deposition (acidity, nitrogen, sulfur, and other pollutants) on primary productivity, decomposition, and plant community compostion of terrestrial ecosystems. I collaborate on interdisciplinary studies of atmosphere-land-water exchanges of carbon, water, energy, and biota.
