Multimodality breast imaging and therapy have been a recent specialties, including combined x-ray tomosynthesis and ultrasound for breast cancer screening. We recently added photoacoustics to image hemoglobin content and oxygenation. M. Moghaddam in EECS and our ultrasound group have developed microwave/ultrasound imaging and therapy for breast cancer ablation and hyperthermia, with potential vascular occlusion and drug delivery. Our long work with acoustic vaporization of body fluids and intravascular perfluorcarbon droplets has led to several new fields of ultrasound therapy and improved diagnosis. The most promising major use throughout medicine and bioscience is minimally or noninvasive microphysiology and thereapy by local acoustic release and transvascular delivery of bioactive molecules.
